Overview

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will have the only compact panel van powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) when this new model is launched in the summer. Already on sale on the Continent, this new van will soon be available in the UK offering;

• Lower cleaner emissions.
• Reduced fuel costs (CNG is approximately 50% less than diesel).

The engine can be operated on biomethane, a sustainable fuel, or CNG which is the same gas we use for heating and cooking at home.  Just in case your gas supply runs out it also has a 13-litre petrol tank in reserve.  

Load space is not affected by the steel gas tanks and 3.2 cubic metres provides ample space. The gas capacity can also offer a range of up to 270 miles depending on how you drive the van and the payload you carry. Volkswagen has thoroughly tested the tanks which are extremely strong, heat resistant and are virtually indestructible in extreme testing conditions.  The four cylinder 2.0-litre petrol engine, in the Caddy, has been optimised to use petrol or CNG and has an output CO2 figure of 157 g/km, over 20% less than the conventional petrol engine.

The van produces 109PS and 118lbs ft or torque at 3,500 rpm and can go from a standstill to 62 mph in 13.8 seconds, before reaching a top speed of 105 mph. This compares favourably with the 1.9-litre TDI PD model.
