First official pictures of new Vauxhall Astra
Vauxhall has released the first official pictures of the new Astra, which will debut as a five-door hatchback at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The new Astra is expected to hit UK showrooms by the end of this year marking the sixth generation Astra in 30 years. The new Astra makes great use of many of the design fetaures found in the Insignia but in its own distinctive way.
The new Astra is 4.4 metres long and has a brand new chassis with a 71 millimetre-longer wheelbase making it even more comfortable inside for passengers. Vauxhall’s clever FlexRide system will be available as an option offering drivers three unique settings: standard, sport and tour to adapt to the different driving conditions and preference of the driver. The latest generation AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting) will also be an option featuring bi-xenon lighting that changes its intensity and reach, to also suit driving conditions.
A new 140 PS turbocharged 1.4-litre petrol unit power train is being introduced to build on Vauxhall’s commitment to engine downsizing and reduced emissions/fuel consumption. The 1.4T joins three further petrol engines which will range from 100PS to 180PS and four diesel engines from 95PS to 160PS. All the engines are Euro 5 complaint.
“The only part of the Astra that isn’t new is its name” said Andy Gibson, Vauxhall’s Marketing Director. “And that name currently accounts for around 30 per cent of all Vauxhall’s car sales, with the five-door hatch taking 60 percent of those sales alone, so it’s important to lead with this body style. Not only is Astra a crucial model for Vauxhall, but we’re confident that it’s blend of dynamic design, new-to-class technology and immense driver appeal will attract an even broader spectrum of buyers in this sector”.
