FORD POWERSHIFT COMBINES AUTO EASE WITH MANUAL EFFICIENCY
The new six speed PowerShift transmission from Ford is capable of delivering the performance and fuel economy of a manual gearbox yet providing the comfort of an automatic.
Ford has achieved this by the use of two electronically-controlled clutch units which ensure a seamless delivery of power to the wheels by controlling effectively “separate three-speed gearboxes”.
When you select “D” for drive, the first gear is selected in gearbox one and the second gear is pre-selected in gearbox two, in anticipation of the next gearchange. As you pull off and reach the appropriate moment, the second gear is engaged and gearbox one then selects third gear ready for the next step up. It doesn’t matter whether you are accelerating or decelerating as the sophisticated electronic technology anticipates this also.
The PowerShift transmission is available with the 136PS 2.0TDCi diesel engine and delivers impressive results. In a Ford Focus for example, with the combination of this engine and the PowerShift transmission, the car delivers upto 46.8mpg and offers a CO2 figure of 154g/km which brings the car nicely under the 160g/km tax threshold for company car drivers.
