HIGHWAYS AGENCY SAYS CHECK YOUR LUGGAGE IS SECURE
The Highways Agency and the Institute of Advance Motorists (IAM) is advising customers to secure their luggage and roof-top boxes before setting off on holiday this year. Apparently in the last 12 months, Highway Agency workers have recovered a wide range of items from England’s motorways.
In the period between the 1st July 2008 and 30th June 2009 the Agency reported 7370 pieces of debris on its motorways. Many of the items came from unsecured luggage or roof top boxes and included bicycles, a hot tub, a surf board and even a kitchen sink!
The Highways Agency staff regularly have to undertake rolling road blocks to retrieve debris so the advice is to properly secure your load before you set off in your car or van.
