EU proposing aircraft-style black boxes in all cars
The European Union is looking at making it mandatory for all cars to be fitted with aircraft-style black boxes which cost around £500. They have recently conducted a £2.4million three-year study which made the recommendation to improve road safety.
The boxes could record 20 types of vehicle data, including speed, information on the driver’s recent movements and whether the driver braked or indicated. This could be used later as evidence in court cases. The study, called Project Veronica, found that drivers with the black box installed were 10% less lkely to be involved in a fatal accident.
Howver the Department for Transport said,”The technology raises serious privacy and legal issues and we have no plans to introduce these devices”. (Source: Daily Telegraph November 2nd)
