Volcanic ash can damage your car paintwork warns Autoglym
Car care firm Autoglym is warning motorists across the UK, that the volcanic ash coming from the Icelandic volcano can damage the paintwork of your car if left unattended. The ash is composed of tiny jagged shards of rock and glass and is highly abrasive, with potential damage to the paintwork and even your wiper blades being caused.
Their advice is as follows:
- Make sure you thoroughly soak the car bodywork with water to loosen as much of the surface deposits as possible.
- Use a pH-neutral car bodywork shampoo solution to neutralise the acidic fallout.
- Use more than one bucket of water to wash, rather than a single larger bucket, to avoid re-applying the ash to your car.
- Keep the car wet with clean water while you wash with a sponge – this keeps the paint bodywork lubricated and reduces the risk of scratching.
- Pay attention to your wiper blades as they may scratch the windscreen and also your side window seals which may also accumulate ash.
- Rinse your car throughly to remove all shampoo residue.
- Dry the car using a high quality microfibre drying towel or synthetic chamois.
- Apply a polish or wax in order to protect the bodywork from future deposits.
- Use a specialist rubber treatment to clean rubber seals, wiper blades and tyre sidewalls.
- Finally, wash your car frequently until the volcanic eruptions cease.
