SMMT publishes 2010 year end car,van and truck registrations

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

New car registrations for 2010 rose by 1.8% to 2,030,857

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has published the December and full year car, van and truck registrations with 2010 new car registrations up 1.8% on 2009. The 2010 car market rose by 35,847 units to 2,030,846 with the fleet market (25+ vehicles) rising by over 10%. Registrations in December fell by 18% to 123,817 units.

Private volumes slipped however due to the end of the Scrappage Incentive Scheme (SIS). The 2011 market is expected to decline by around 5% with a forecasted UK car registrations figure of 1.93 million units.

Here are some other highlights from the SMMT about new car registrations in 2010;

  • Diesel penetration rose to a record 46.1% which was helped by the increase in MPV and SUV sales, which are usually diesel, and also due to the fall in private retail car sales due to the Scrappage Scheme, which tended to be smaller petrol models.
  • The Ford Fiesta was the biggest selling new car in the UK for the second successive year and Ford was the best selling brand.
  • In December however, Vauxhall was the best selling brand with the new Astra the best selling model.

Van and truck registrations

Van and truck registrations climbed by 16.4% in 2010 with full year up to 257,373 units and in December there were 20,260 registrations, up 25.6%. Vans were up by 21.7% to 17,086 in December with the full year figures finishing at 222,915, up by 19.6%.

However truck registrations rose by 51.6% to 3,174 in December with the full year down by just 0.8% and 34,458 units registered. Further details about 2010 vehicle registrations can be found at the SMMT website.

November car registrations down 11.5% but ahead of expectations

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

November UK new car registrations fell by 11.5%

The SMMT has released the data on new car registrations which fell by 11.5% in November to 139,875 units. This was ahead of the forecast and new car market registrations remain up by 3.4% over the first 11 months of the year, at 1,907,029 units. The final 2010 year figure is expected to be around the 2.03 million unit mark, up by 2% on the 2009 figure. The SMMT also forecasts that the market will fall in 2011 by 5% to 1.93 million units as consumers and businesses alike react to the impact of the Government’s austerity measures and the squeeze on spending.

The market is still trying to adjust to the removal of the Car Scrappage Incentive Scheme, however the better than expected performance was due to an improvement in the fleet volume sector (25+ vehicles), which was up by 10.7% over the year to date numbers.

Diesel car volumes also rose sharply to 53% in November, plus alternatively fuelled cars jumped by 83.5% in the month to gain an overall market share of 1.3% of the November car registrations. The Ford Fiesta was once again the top seller in the month, followed by the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf. Year-to-date the top three sellers are the Ford Fiesta (98,453 units), Vauxhall Astra (75,276) and Ford Focus (73,973).

Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive, said,”New car registrations fell by less than expected in November with demand from the fleet sector helping to offset the market rebalancing following the end of the Scrappage Incentive Scheme. Registrations are expected to fall next month, but demand may benefit from motorists looking to avoid the January VAT rise. This factor, coupled with the strength of the first half of 2010, means year-end volumes are expected to lift to over 2.03 million units, 2% up from last year. Next year will continue to be challenging as consumer spending tightens and government’s austerity measures take effect”.

SMMT reports on weak new car registrations in October

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Diesel market share was highest at 54.7%, a rise of 3.8%

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has released the latest data on new car registrations in October which show a fall of 22.2% to 131,495 units. Overall, the market remains up over the first ten months of the year, at 1,767,154 units.

The SMMT is also forecasting further declines in November and December, with the overall 2010 market expected to be at around 2,026 million units, up by 1.5% on 2009 units. Interestingly diesel market share also rose by 3.8% and has reached its best ever month at 54.7%, with the year-to date figure at 45.3%.

The Ford Fiesta was again the best selling model but registrations of supermini and mini segment cars has continued to fall sharply, as the Car Scrappage Scheme no longer operates. In terms of the market sectors, the split between Private (retail customers), Fleet (25+ fleets) and Business (sub 25 fleets) October new car registrations was reported as follows

  • Private new car registrations – 57,520.
  • Fleet new car registrations – 68,337.
  • Business new car registrations – 5,638.
  • Total new car registrations – 131,495.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive commented,” There was a significant fall in October’s new car registrations, reflecting the impact of the Scrappage Incentive Scheme (SIS) at this time last year and some deterioration in consumer confidence. Total new car registrations in 2010 are forecast to be 2.026 million units, up 1.5% on 2009. The industry expects the coming months to be challenging with slow, but steady, economic growth feeding through to improved confidence and demand during 2011″.

If you opt for Titanium model you now benefit from a Sony radio with CD player, USB and Bluetooth as standard, as well as cruise control and automatic headlights. So far this year around 20 per cent of all Fiestas ordered have been the top-of-the range Titanium model.

Mark Simpson, Ford of Britain marketing director , said,”Fiesta has taken the top sales spot for small cars every month since the start of 2009. We know that whilst customers may choose a smaller car than before, perhaps for economy reasons, they still want the technology and comfort features to make their Fiesta a premium choice. There are a number of Ford Fiesta personal contract hire offers on the site at present and all are available with full maintenance cover included.

SMMT releases September’s car and van registrations data

Thursday, October 7th, 2010
Car registrations fell by 8.9% in September to 335,246 units.

Ford Fiesta

Car registrations fell by 8.9% in September to 335,246, however the overall market remains up at 7.8% over the year-to-date position at 1,635,659 units. However if you take out the affect of the Car Scrappage scheme in 2009, the figure for September was 16.9% ahead year-on-year, and on a par with 2008.

The full market year is still expected to hold at two million cars, up marginally on 2009. The strongest performers in September were Fleet (25+vehicles), diesels and alternatively fuelled cars. Private registrations were down 19% at 170,951 and Business (sub 25 fleet) was down 8.5% at 18,269 cars. Yet again the Ford Fiesta topped the charts and was the best selling model in September as well as year-to-date.

Total commercial registrations were up by 3.7% to 242,908 for the rolling year with 39,942 vehicles registered in September. Vans were at 35,309 for the month and up 10.6% to 212,576 for the rolling year, however Trucks were down 28% to 30,332 for the rolling year, with only 4,633 registered in September.
