Ford Focus

Ford is the UK’s market leader and has just reported increases in its car sales and market share in both January and February this year.

Ford’s popular car range secured 14.5 per cent of the February market, up 2.6 percentage points compared with February 2011, while Ford’s commercial vehicles (CVs) maintained overall leadership of the CV market. This follows the latest registrations data released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The Ford Focus is the UK’s February best seller and the Ford Fiesta is also the number one seller for the year to date, while Ford commercial vehicles, including the Transit, lead both the LCV and MCV segments.

Mark Ovenden, Ford of Britain managing director, said:  “Ford’s car range has started 2012 with a terrific performance that extends our UK lead in total car sales, and provides a good indicator for March, when sales are boosted significantly by the registration plate change”.

The SMMT data has shown that total car sales last month were down 2.5 per cent to 61,868 units, compared with the same period in February 2011. However, Ford car sales of 8,957 were up 18.8 per cent, from 7,542 in February 2011.

Ford Transit in AAH livery

Ford has created a modified Transit van known as the “Pharmavan”, in association with AAH Pharmaceuticals, the UK’s leading distributor of pharmaceuticals and healthcare products. AAH has just taken delivery of 270 Ford models to add to its 800-strong van fleet.

Ford provided AAH with a special air-conditioned load area in their long-wheelbase Ford Transit 300 and the “Pharmavan” keeps their sensitive pharmaceuticals at the correct, ambient temperature during delivery around Britain.

Geoff Wright, head of corporate services for AAH, commented: “Most pharmaceutical products have to be kept at a steady ambient temperature. Using a fully refrigerated vehicle with dual compartments for this role comes at a high price, including increased fuel consumption, running costs and CO₂ emissions”.

He went on to say,”When the temperature in the Pharmavan’s load bay dips below 10 deg C, the heat kicks in independently of the driver. When it nears 25 degrees, the air-conditioning brings the temperature down. The system is only in use when required making it extremely cost-efficient and easy to operate.”

When searching on the internet you can be attracted by some really low monthly personal car leasing rentals for the model of vehicle you are looking for. There are however a number of factors determining how much your monthly personal car leasing rental will be.

On personal car leasing (or personal contract hire as it is also called) the usual items to check are as follows;

• Type of contract – is it with or without maintenance cover?  Without maintenance is usually less per month.
• What is the annual mileage allowance on the contract?  The lower the annual mileage allowance, the lower the rental will be.
• How long is the contract for i.e. 24, 36, 48 months….? Usually the longer the contract length, the lower the ongoing monthly rental.
• Is the vehicle the most current model or an old stock model that needs shifting- hence the low rental?
• Has the VAT been included in the rental you are looking at? Personal car leasing attracts VAT so look at the VAT inclusive rental.

However, the number one factor to look at is the amount of the initial rental as we have shown below.

Ford has added ingenious hinged front doors and sliding rear doors that integrate into the central body pillars of the new Ford B-MAX, providing superb access for all passengers and luggage. The Easy Door Access System makes loading bulky items, or helping children in and out of the car in tight spaces, really simple and easy, as well as delivering extra crash protection.

In developing the concept, a Ford team spent several days observing drivers in their daily routine to understand exactly what drivers wanted in a compact car and then produced a safe and practical vehicle which would meet those needs. One excellent safety feature is moving the high-strength body-structure from the central body pillars and integrating it directly into the doors, to ensure excellent crash protection particularly in the event of a side impact.

The B-MAX has special ultra-high-strength steels, which provide up to five times the strength of conventional mild steel, used in key parts of the body and doors, to create a very strong and stiff structure without adding extra weight. The rear seats and the front passenger seat can also be folded flat to create a large, convenient load platform, to accommodate everything from bicycles, to flat-pack furniture.

“The door concept means you can load really large items, more than 2.3 metres long, through the side doors,” said Ernst Reim, Chief Interior Designer, Ford of Europe. “This makes a trip to the furniture store, or even a day at the beach with your surfboard, more realistic.”

The All-New Ford B-MAX will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month and should go on sale in Europe later in the year.

Euro NCAP, the independent car safety organisation, has just named the Ford Focus as Europe’s “Best in Class” small family car. EuroNCAP awarded the Focus’ a five-star Euro NCAP rating and four Euro NCAP Advanced rewards for its innovative safety features, which is a record for a mass market production car.

The new Ford Ranger also earned special praise highlighting its achievement as the only pickup to achieve a maximum five-star rating and is the safest pickup Euro NCAP has ever tested.

The Focus picked up one of only five best in class awards on the strength of its maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating as well as four Euro NCAP Advanced rewards last year, an achievement which is as yet, unmatched by any other high-volume car.

“This award has special meaning because designing and building the safest vehicles possible is a core value at Ford,” said Stephen Odell, chairman and CEO, Ford of Europe. “The Focus exemplifies our approach to design cars that both help drivers avoid accidents and protect them when one is inevitable.”

The Ford Focus five-star rating was achieved through an adult occupant score of 92 per cent, child occupant rating of 82 per cent, pedestrian score of 72 per cent and a safety assist rating of 71 per cent.

The Focus also received their Euro NCAP Advanced rewards for these four technologies:

• Forward Alert- uses radar technology to scan the road ahead and alerts the driver if a collision is likely.
• Active City Stop - helps to avoid or mitigate accidents at low speeds
• Lane Keeping Aid technologies- warn drivers and assists drivers who stray from their lane.
