Peugeot 207 tops the European Car Reliability Survey

Peugeot 207 tops Warranty Direct reliability survey as most reliable car

Peugeot 207

The popular Peugeot 207 has topped a Warranty Direct survey which analysed more than 20,000 live warranty policies on three to seven year old cars, made by European manufacturers, to see the difference in claims for repairs.

The Peugeot 207 has an excellent repair record at a 6% repair rate in an average year, while the Fiat Panda came in second at 14%. Two other Peugeot models scored well with the 206 CC in 3rd and the Peugeot 107 at 9th position. The Warranty Direct Reliability Index looks at a number of items, including a review of the rates of mechanical failure, average mileage, age and repair cost, to calculate the Reliability Index rating.

Warranty Direct Managing Director, Duncan McClure Fisher, commented,”The Peugeot 207′s incredibly low incidence rate of just 6% is excellent and is certainly a match for the most reliable vehicles”. Vehicle reliability is just one of the measures a lease company looks at when setting their residual values and to calculate their contract hire leasing rental, so this news should have a positive impact, especially if “with full maintenance cover” is also included. Peugeot contract hire leasing prices are on the site now, on the 207 range.

Peugeot 308

The Peugeot ECO CUP was designed to see if four different standard Peugeot HDi diesel models, in the hands of everyday drivers, could better the official government fuel economy figures for the vehicles. The cars were driven over 600 miles of French and Swiss roads in heavy wintery conditions.

The average fuel consumption achieved by the winning drivers is as follows;

  1. Peugeot 308 HDi FAP 110 – 89.95 mpg
  2. Peugeot 207 HDi 90 - 87.10 mpg
  3. Peugeot 5008  HDi FAP 110 – 84.77 mpg
  4. Peugeot 3008 HDi FAP 110 – 79.10 mpg

Jon Goodman, Managing Director of Peugeot UK said,”This project has proven two things; that there are a lot of people out there interested in doing their bit for the planet by stretching fuel economy to the max; and that this can be achieved in standard Peugeot diesel cars, with our new 5008 7-seater MPV nearly cracking 85mpg and our 308 5-door family hatch pushing 90 mpg”. Peugeot contract hire prices are available now and you can also search by combined mpg using the Super Shopper.

NEW CAR REGISTRATIONS ROSE BY 2.4% IN JULY

Monday, August 10th, 2009

The SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) has reported that new car sales increased in July to 157,149, an increase of 2.4% – the first time in 15 months that an increase has been seen. This is a direct result of the car scrappage scheme which came into effect on the 18th May 2009, as registrations to private buyers were up by 33.4% in the month. Growth was also reported in the small car sectors with the Mini segment registrations more than trebling in July and super-mini rising by 15.7% to account for 37.5% of all registrations.

The 2.4% figure in July was a modest rise but it also shows car registrations are still fragile. The average for July over a period between 1999 and 2008, was 174,879 units so overall registrations are still down 10.1% below the ”July” average. The market is also still down by almost 550,000 units over the past 12 months.

Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive, said, “The impact of the car scrappage scheme is clear and we are encouraged by the positive impact it has had, increasing new car registrations for the first time since April 2008. Industry still faces a long road to recovery and we urge government to take action to sustain economic recovery through easing access to finance and credit and delivering the loan guarantees set out by the Automotive Assistance Programme”.

The Ford Fiesta has been the best selling car for the last nine months however Hyundai makes an entry into the top ten models for the first time at position nine.

Top ten best sellers in July

  1. Ford Fiesta - 8,976
  2. Ford Focus – 7,934
  3. Vauxhall Corsa - 5,920
  4. Vauxhall Astra - 5,705
  5. Volkswagen Golf - 4,101
  6. Peugeot 207 - 3,957
  7. Vauxhall Insignia – 3,340
  8. BMW 3 Series – 3,292
  9. Hyundai i10 – 3,084
  10. Renault Clio -2,837

Your new car radio – is it digital or analogue?

Monday, June 29th, 2009

The end of 2015 seems a long way off, but this is the date when Government Ministers have announced that all analogue signals will be switched off and all signals move on to a digital platform. This will effectively make any FM analogue radio fitted to your car or van now, obselete. So if you are about to choose your new car or van it might be worth considering fitting a DAB digital system.

Digital radio

Digital radio

Many of the top-selling models such as the Ford Focus, Fiat Punto, Volkswagen Polo, Peugeot 207, Vauxhall Astra and Renault Clio still remain in the analogue age, though will offer a digital radio as an extra option for circa £200-£500. Ford for example does fit DAB radios as standard to many Titanium models in their range, like the Kuga. Of course the more luxurious models like the Audi A8, BMW M5 and M6, Jaguar Sovereign and Land Rover Freelander come with digital radios as standard, but it is worth checking before you order your new vehicle. You can also check out DAB reception and coverage at www.getdab.com.

Julie Sinclair, of Auto Express magazine said ” Motorists wanting to sell their cars will have to upgrade their radios whether they like it or not. It’s going to cost them money”. There is also likely to be a period of disruption when the switch from analogue to digital happens, as transmitters are adapted to the new system.

Mandy Green of the Digital Radio Development Bureau , which is funded by the BBC and commercial broadcasters, said: “We are not happy about it but there is not a lot we can do. Everything comes off the same mast so when you are doing work to facilitate the switchover, it affects both the analogue and digital radio signal”.

If you are buying, or financing your next car on a loan agreement, you should consider the potential impact on the resale value of your vehicle, if you have an analogue FM radio as standard. Most manufacturer car radios are already fitted into the dashboard and are an integral part of the interior and therefore may be difficult to replace when the switchover happens. Of course if you contract hire your vehicle you don’t need to worry about the impact on the second hand value, as the risk on the disposal proceeds is the responsibility of the car leasing company.
