The smart fortwo cdi has just won the “Overall Best MPG” title in the recent Fleet World MPG Marathon 2011, recording a stunning 99.24 mpg over the 370.9 mile course. This is the most frugal result ever recorded in the 11-year history of the competition and this is the third year the car has won this award.

The smart cdi fortwo cdi only emits CO2 emissions of 86g/km from its 54bhp engine and is an ideal car for running round a city or town. Gary Savage Mercedes-Benz said,”smart has been pushing the boundaries of environmental motoring for 13 years now, and as well as being frugal, it’s also fun to drive. Next year the electric drive goes on sale, which doesn’t emit any local emissions at all”.

Balfour Beatty smart cars

Balfour Beatty has just added eight new smart fortwo cdi coupes to its vehicle fleet of pool cars, as a way of demonstrating their commitment to reducing CO2 emissions. The smart cars offer CO2 emissions of just 86g/km and return a remarkable 85.6mpg on the combined fuel cycle.

Mike Whittington, Sales Director Mercedes-Benz UK, said,”It is fair to say that smart isn’t the first fleet choice for some buyers, but if you open your mind to the possibilities, it makes sense. Financially the amazing fuel consumption, low CO2 and Congestion Charge exemption give impressive savings”.

He went onto say,”All smart models have the same armoury of standard safety systems as their bigger Mercedes-Benz siblings. We’re proud that Balfour Beatty has chosen smart for its fleet”

smart in police livery

Mercedes-Benz supplied a smart fortwo demonstrator for the Tayside Police to use at the T in the Park festival. The smart was decked out in full police livery and following its appearance, several other Scottish police forces are now going to give the car a trial, including Lothian and Borders, Strathclyde, Fife and Central Scotland constabularies.

Graham Strachan, Tayside’s Police Fleet Manager said;”The fuel consumption and carbon footprint of vehicles is now high on the agenda of every police force in the country. smart’s reputation for economy and low emissions is well-known so it was perfect for us to evaluate it at T in the Park.

The smart micro hybrid drive (mhd) incorporates a stop-start function which turns off the engine if idling at less than 5mph and instantly re-starting when the brake pedal is released. The smart mhd models emit only 103g/km of CO2. The recently launched smart fortwo cdi offers a staggering 85.6 miles per gallon on the combined fuel cycle and offers very low car CO2 emissions of 88g/km.
