The Ford Fiesta was the UK's top seller in 2011

Ford Fiesta

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has just announced the December 2011 and 2011 full year new car registration figures, with the market down 4.4% at 1.94 million units sold. This was ahead of the 1.92 million forecast number however.

The December numbers fell by 3.7% year-on-year, at 119,188 units, and diesel and alternatively fuelled cars took record market shares over the year, as motorists look for best fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.

The average new car CO2 emissions figure fell to a new low of 138.1g/km, which is down 4.2% on the 2010 number of 144.2g/km of CO2 and 23.7% below the 2000 figure of 181.0g/km.

Other highlights;

  • Fleet sales maintained the new car registrations levels with a 4.7% growth year on year, from 973,233 in 2010 to 1,019,126 in 2011.
  • Private registrations fell by 14.1% for the year from 958,005 to 823,094.
  • Business (sub-25 fleet) registrations were flat (99,608 in 2010 to 99,033 in 2011).
  • Diesel volumes outsold petrol cars for the first time.
  • The Ford Fiesta was the best selling car in 2011, with the Volkswagen Golf the best selling diesel model.

Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive, commented,”2011 proved to be a challenging year for the UK motor industry. Total new car registrations were slightly ahead of industry expectations at 1.94 million units, still down 4.4% on 2010. Weak economic growth will make trading conditions tough in 2012, but record numbers of new and updated models, significantly improved fuel efficiency and exciting new technologies will help to encourage consumers into showrooms. Business and consumer confidence will be the key to a successful year, so it will be important that government delivers on its growth strategy and helps to resolve instability in the Euro Zone”.

If you are looking to contract hire a new car in 2012 and want to find the best model for your money, with the lowest CO2 emissions and best fuel economy then do try our Vehicle Type Shopper. You can select how much you want to spend, your CO2 ranges and the best fuel efficient cars too.

Bosch automotive technology on display at SMMT headquarters

The SMMT headquarters is in Westminster

SMMT display

A 1899 Daimler and 2011 Jaguar XJ are currently on display at the headquarters of the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) in Westminster, with both cars equipped with Bosch automotive technology. The display is marking the 125th anniversary of Robert Bosch, who also worked with the first president of the SMMT, Frederik Simms.

Each car represents the earliest and latest model to use Bosch technology, with the 1899 Daimler Phaeton 12hp being fitted with a Bosch magneto. This classic car has been loaned from the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu. In its day, the Daimler was seen as a very advanced vehicle (technically) with candle-powered headlamps, pneumatic tyres on the front wheels and solid rubber tyres on the rear.

The Jaguar XJ 3.0-litre diesel long wheelbase saloon has some of the latest innovative Bosch technology, with features such as its diesel engine management system, electronic stability program (ESP), plus a range of infotainment systems and a range of other sensors.

New Low Emission Zone for vans sees 1.0 million vans not eligible

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011
1.0 millions vans are not "Euro 3" compliant in the UK and will have to pay a charge

Do you need a new van?

London’s new Low Emission Zone requires larger vans, minibuses and other specialist diesel vehicles to meet “Euro 3″ emission standards if they are able to drive freely in the new zone, which comes into effect on the 3rd January 2012. Research conducted by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has found that out of the 3.57 million vans on UK roads at the end of 2012, over 31% were not eligible.

The new legislation will result in many van operators having to pay a daily charge to enter the zone. Usually, “Euro 3″ vehicles are those that have been registered after the 1st January 2002, so if you run a commercial vehicle that is older than 10 years from January next year, you may well be affected.

Paul Everitt, Chief Executive of the SMMT, said,”It’s not only emissions that improve when owners and operators upgrade, fuel efficiency also gets better, returning real-world benefits on top of the LEZ savings. SMMT anticipates a slight rise in commercial vehicle registrations in this last quarter of 2011 as owners and operators buy-into more efficient, compliant vehicles. The CV market has been strong all year and is up 20% for the year-to-date. It’s clear that those businesses and individuals running vans and trucks in the capital have already begun to renew their vehicles and we’ll be watching with interest how the market performs over the next few months.”

If you are thinking about changing your commercial vehicle then we have all models available now on contract hire.

Further information about the Low Emission Zone can be found at the TfL website.

SMMT calls on government to boost UK competitiveness in Autumn Statement

SMMT calls on the government to boost car manufacturing

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has called upon the UK government to use today’s Autumn Statement to deliver tangible changes to unlock private sector investment and support export-led growth. Specifically they want the government to focus on the following.

  • R&D tax credit reform – Offer reform to make the R&D tax relief ‘above the line’ to generate more investment and jobs, by making the incentive more visible and allowing the UK to compete more effectively with overseas competitors.
  • Capital allowances – Allowances for capital spending in the UK are now among the lowest in the G20. To grow and develop the domestic supply chain, government must therefore help smaller and medium enterprises (SMEs) to invest now in plants, machinery, technology and retooling.
  • Skills – Skills are vital for productive and globally competitive suppliers. Flexible government support is needed to deliver up-skilling of the existing workforce and also support for advanced apprenticeships.
  • Business rates – The competition for investment and new model development with sister plants is intense for UK manufacturers. Current business rates for manufacturing sites are not internationally competitive, risking global investors favouring other countries in Europe and around the world in a drive to reduce cost per car.
  • Access to affordable finance – Without the ability to obtain competitive finance and credit, businesses across the UK – particularly SMEs – are unable to invest and grow. The government’s credit easing plan has to be well targeted to meet the needs of the businesses it is trying to support.

Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive, said,”Action to build the competitiveness of UK plc through private sector investment will be key to delivering economic growth. Next week’s Autumn Statement will be crucial in determining the rate of UK economic recovery and the future decisions of global automotive companies and their supply chains”.

Jaguar Land Rover’s Range_e Plug-in Hybrid diesel-electric gets SMMT award

Range_e Plug-in Hybrid diesel-electric offers 85mpg and CO2 emisions of 89g/km

Range_e Plug-in Hybrid diesel-electric

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has just awarded Jaguar Land Rover an award for automotive innovation for their Range_e Plug-in Hybrid diesel electric vehicle system. The Range_e concept points the way for future Jaguar Land Rover vehicles, by offering low CO2 emissions and high fuel efficiency for production 4×4 models.

The Range_e is a luxury all-wheel drive vehicle, based on the Range Rover Sport, that is powered by a plug-in hybrid system which brings together a 69kW electric motor and Land Rover’s 245PS 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel engine. The vehicle can be driven for 20 miles on pure electric power, creating zero tailpipe emissions, with overall CO2 emissions at 89g/km. The Range_e offers 85mpg fuel economy and the combined 339PS delivers a top speed of 120mph.

Battery recharging for the 14.2kWh lithium-ion battery can easily be accomplished by using a 240V power source and the system was first shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March. The first Land Rover diesel-electric hybrid is scheduled for launch in 2013.

Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive, said,”October’s new car market rose 2.6% on last year -a positive result despite the uncertain economic climate. Ford’s whole product range also performed well with strong sales reported for the C-MAX, Ford Kuga and Ford Galaxy as well.

Against intense competition our best-ever vehicle range is helping to strengthen Ford’s continued UK market leadership. Particulary pleasing is the success of our most recently launched models such as the Focus and C-MAX, which are boosting customer appreciation of the distinctive attributes of the blue oval brand”.

SMMT believes UK automotive manufacturing will drive investment-led growth

Monday, September 19th, 2011

New Car CO2 emissions free report is available from the SMMT

Paul Everitt, SMMT Chief Executive, believes that the UK automotive industry will drive investment-led growth and and will deliver this message at various Party Conference fringe events over the next three weeks, where high profile MPs, local councillors and policy advisers will attend.

Mr Everitt said,”It is not a question of if investment in the global automotive industry will take place, but when and where it will happen. There are now real opportunities to strengthen the UK supply base and bring new investment into fast emerging ultra-low carbon technologies. Targeted tax incentives and support programmes can help trigger the private sector investment needed to kick start growth”.

The SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders) is one of the largest and most influential trade associations in the UK and it supports the interests of the UK automotive industry both at home and abroad. They produce a number of free reports of interest around CO2 emissions and here is a link to two of them.
