Economy Golfs

Volkswagen is launching an economy range of the Golf based on a 1.6-litre common rail diesel engine, including a BlueMotion variant. All the new Golf models have five-speed manual gearboxes and achieve CO2 emissions of less than 120g/km. The most efficient of the new range achieves 68.9mpg on the combined mpg cycle.

The models, key information and prices

The 105PS version reaches 0-62mph in 11.3 seconds with the 90PS versions reaching 0-62 in 12.9 seconds. Top speed ranges between 110mph for the 90PS and 117/118mph for the 105PS with the BlueMotion adding the extra one mph top speed.

The Golf BlueMotion is based on the SE model and as such comes with seven airbags, ABS,  ESP, Climatic air conditioning, rain sensors, automatic lights, an iPod compatible CD stereo with eight speakers plus cruise control. The 2.0-litre TDI 110PS engine is now no longer available to order in the Golf range. Second phase BlueMotion models are being introduced in late 2009 with Volkswagen promising a CO2 output of just 99g/km and a combined fuel consumption of over 75mpg. VW Touareg

A BlueMotion version of the Touareg, the luxury off-roader from Volkswagen is now available. The Touareg Bluemotion is fitted with a more efficient version of the standard car’s 3.0-litre V6 TDI common rail diesel engine which develops 225PS and offers a CO2 output of 219g/km.

As with all BlueMotion models a number of changes have been made including revised aerodynamcs, an optimised engine including a more efficient alternator, low rolling resistance tyres and a ride height lowered by 25mm to reduce drag. The Touareg BlueMotion also features a regenerative braking system which is used to charge the battery while the vehicle is in motion, reducing the workload of the engine and cutting fuel consumption further. The car offers a combined fuel consumption figure of 34.0 mpg and reaches 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and has a top speed (where permitted) of 126mph.

Equipment levels on both trim levels, the BlueMotion and BlueMotion SE are high with cruise control, leather multi-function steering wheel and 17-inch Makalu alloy wheels fitted as standard on BlueMotion. On the SE version you get 2Zone electronic climate control, touchscreen satellite navigation system, heated front seats, “Cricket” leather upholstery, Walnut wood interior trim and 18-inch “Valley” alloys. Add to this the advanced 4xMOTION all-wheel drive system linked to an Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), hill start and descent-assist, Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) and six airbags are all standard as well. New VW Scirocco R

Volkswagen is giving spectators at Nurburgring 24hrs a preview of the new Scirocco R version of this popular sports car. This is the fastest and most powerful Scirocco ever produced offering an extra 65PS over the current Scirocco’s 2.0-litre TSI engine.

The power is channelled, through the front wheels, via a six-speed manual engine or DSG gearbox and XDS (an electronic axle control) is also introduced to provide greater grip in all driving conditions. As with the rest of the VW Scirocco range the new R version is fitted with Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) allowing three settings, normal, comfort or sports mode and the braking system has also been uprated with larger discs and calipers.

The Scirocco R also gets a new look with a new front bumper featuring LED running lights, a trio of airdams while the Xenon lights frame a new gloss black grille element, set into which is a single “R” badge. The Scirocco R also gets a set of body coloured side skirts replacing the rubbing strips on the standard Scirocco.

At the back the car features smoked rear lenses, rear spoiler plus a prominent diffuser finished in gloss black mounted between a pair of new oval tailpipes, plus of course an “R” logo designating the new model. Inside are new sport seats with “R” logos plus a black finish on the centre console, vents and doorcards, replacing the silver highlights found on the standard Scirocco.

You also get a new three-spoke, flat bottomed steering wheel finished in black leather with contrasting white stitching, sitting in front of new white backlit dials and blue needles which are unique to the “R” model.

Standard accessories include touchscreen CD stereo, 2Zone climate control, six airbags and Electronic Stabilisation Programme.
