We have chosen two popular crossover vehicles, each costing a different amount to buy outright.

Volvo XC60 Diesel D3 163bhp DRIVe ES 5-door with Start Stop – List Price £26915

Vauxhall Antara Diesel Estate 2.2 CDTi Exclusiv 5-door 2WD – List Price £18975

If you have spare cash you could probably walk into any dealership and negotiate a discount off the recommended manufacturer list price but this will not help you when you look at how much money your brand new vehicle will lose over time, or how much money you can save by looking at contract hire.

The difference in List Price for the two vehicles is nearly £8,000 and you might not believe it but the contract hire monthly rental on the same terms is near enough the same at £287.68 excluding VAT for the Vauxhall Antara and £287.40 excluding VAT for the Volvo XC60.

The two prices above are based on a two year contract, 6 rentals in advance, non-maintenance contract hire at 10,000 miles per annum. Please note these rentals may change at any time.

Why is the rental nearly the same when the cost difference is nearly £8,000 if you buy outright?

There are a number of factors but the main two are as follows.

The Volvo XC60 has a better resale value in 2 years with 20,000 miles on the clock, than the Vauxhall Antara.

The leasing company may have negotiated a better fleet discount for the Volvo XC60.

So before you buy a car, see what the contract hire rental is for your final vehicle choices, as you can protect yourself from vehicle depreciation and also drive a better car than you think.

Volvo has released the details of their new, technically advanced, V60 Plug-in Hybrid model which is an electric car, hybrid car and muscle-car all rolled into one. With the touch of the button you choose which one of these cars you want to drive.

In Pure mode the car is powered solely by its electric motor as much as possible, with a range of up to 32 miles with zero emissions. The Hybrid setting is the standard driving mode for the car, with the diesel engine and electric motor working in tandem. CO2 emissions are 49g/km and the range in this mode is up to 621 miles.

However if you opt for Power Mode, the car technology is optimised for maximum performance and the 2.4-litre diesel and electric motor’s combined power of 285bhp (215+70) offers you a 0-62mph acceleration time of just 6.2 seconds. The car also has an AWD button that activates the electrical four-wheel drive (diesel power to the front wheels and electrical power to the rear). Due to the electric motor’s lower power the AWD (all-wheel drive) system can only operate up to speeds of 75mph, however if you are driving in the snow or mud this is probably fast enough.

Volvo V60 Plug-in Hybrid model

The V60 Plug-in Hybrid can be fully charged from a regular power outlet (230V/6A, 10A or 16A) at home and recharging times will vary with amperage. A full charge takes 4.5 hours on a 10A outlet and this is cut to 3.5 hours with 16A, or if you only have access to 6A then the charge takes 7.5 hours.

The indicative price for the world’s first plug-in hybrid with a diesel engine starts from £45,000 to £50,000 in the UK, minus of course any government Plug-in Car Grant for electric cars. Initial production will start with 1,000 vehicles in November 2012 and these vehicles will be offered with Pure Limited specification which includes the highest SE Lux trim level.

It will also be launched in one colour, Electric Silver, and also comes with aero-designed 17-inch alloy wheels, integrated exhaust tailpipes and various gloss black body features for example on the grille and spoiler. Other standard equipment includes parking sensors front and rear, High Performance Multimedia DVD audio system with eight loudspeakers and seven-inch screen, Bluetooth phone link, electrically adjustable driver’s seat and speed-dependent power steering.

The car also features a D6 badge, the first Volvo to carry this emblem, plus chromed Plug-in Hybrid badging on the tailgate and front wings. Inside the car you get a black leather upholstery covered steering wheel and other distinctive features like the specially designed floor mats and a gear knob with integrated indicator.

A special feature of the car is its Save Mode which conserves the battery charge for driving later in Pure Mode. The aim of this feature is to always ensure you have enough battery power for around 12.5 miles on pure electricity driving alone which may be useful when driving into an urban green zone.

The 2011 Motorexpo, which was held at London’s Canary Wharf, was a resounding success with more than 410,000 visitors attending the event. Motorexpo is the UK’s largest, free-to-visit gathering of car manufacturers and there were just over 250 new cars on show.
New models such as the BMW 6 Series Coupe, 2012 Jaguar XF, Lexus CT 200h, Mercedes-Benz SLK and CLS 63 AMG, Saab 9-5 SportWagon and the Bentley Continental GT all made their UK public debuts. Popular attractions at the event were the characters from the Disney.Pixar blockbuster “Cars 2″, Lightning McQueen and Finn McMissile and of course Titan the Robot.

The “Drive the Future” green zone was also popular with showgoers able to see electric cars such as the Vauxhall Ampera, Mitsubishi i-MIEV and Tesla Roadster.
If you have decided on the model of car you want to order on contract hire leasing, then you do need to consider the vehicle stock lead times and availability of your model, especially if you also want to personalise it with any accessories and choose the colour.

For example, if you are thinking of leasing an Audi A1, the wait for your vehicle delivery may be long, as lead times are as high as 28 weeks. So order early to avoid disappointment and possibly a long wait for your new vehicle. If you do order early, you may find that the manufacturer will “price protect” the vehicle, from future manufacturer list price increases, (depending on the length of the factory order build time), however do check this with your chosen leasing company.

The iconic Mazda MX-5 has been voted as Best Convertible at the CarBuyer Awards 2011, and is still getting awards presented, 21 years after its successful launch in the UK.

CarBuyer.co.uk judges, commented,”Cars that are this much fun rarely make so much sense. The latest MX-5 has a racy new look to match the rest of the Mazda 2011 line-up and comes with attractive prices. Build quality is brilliant and reliability is first rate, while the 1.8 and 2.0 engines provide just the right amount of performance”.

The Mazda MX-5 scored 4.6 out of a possible maximum score of 5 and beat off competition from the likes of Audi, Peugeot and Volvo, to claim the Best Convertible award. Mazda MX-5 contract hire leasing is available on the site now.

Ultimate Car Control has teamed up with Volvo to offer company car drivers an Excellence in Professional Driving (EPD) training programme. This is the only fully legally compliant driver training programme in the UK and Ultimate Car Control chose Volvo for their safety reputation and innovative new technology. Organisations are now legally obliged (Duty of Care) under Health and Safety legislation to develop company policies that protect their employees if using their car (or van) for work purposes. Ultimate Car Control has reported that companies who have put their fleet drivers through the one-day course have already reported great results. One organisation has already witnessed a drop in accidents by 47% and a 37% drop in insurance premiums. The course involves a classroom-based session covering hazard perception, the effects of drugs and alcohol on drivers as well as explaining how vehicle safety systems such as anti-lock braking systems actually work. The second part of the course is a dynamic driver training session where drivers learn how to drive in extreme situations and learn how to keep control of their vehicle. If you are interested in finding out more you can contact Ultimate Car Control direct.
