Cambridgeshire is situated in the east of England and consists of two quite different landscapes. The north is where the Fens are - a flat area of straight lines of dykes and roads. The south, in contrast, has rolling hills. Cambridge is the county town of Cambridgeshire, and by far the most popular attraction. There is so much historical and architectural beauty in Cambridge to see. The university has many superb buildings. Trinity College and King’s College are two to mention. Trinity College was founded by Henry VIII and King’s College is world renowned for its choir, which still has daily services in the chapel. A good way to see Cambridge is by walking along The Backs from where you can appreciate the oldest colleges along the banks of the River Cam. Of course you could always hire a punt. What a fantastic way to see the sights.
However, there is also Ely, with its superb Norman cathedral, rising high above the flat expanse of the flat countryside of the north. Ely is named after the eels which swam in the shallow waters in the area and interestingly, eels were once used as a local currency. Another great place to visit is Peterborough with its impressive medieval cathedral. Then there is Ramsey, where the National Trust run the remains of a medieval, powerful abbey. If aviation is your game, then the Duxford Aircraft Museum is well worth a visit. They have the largest display of historic aircraft in Europe and in an important airfield of World War II. There are regular airshows and there is a museum where you can see a depiction of land warfare.
