Somerset is a county that is alive with history, with Wells Cathedral, located in the small town of Wells, to dozens of other historic villages, with their own unique stories on offer. Somerset has a wealth of country houses and gardens to explore, with many dating back to Elizabethan times.
It is also the home to some great museums like the larger Fleet Air Arm Museum, Haynes Motor Museum and Helicopter Museum, or even the small and quirky Bakelite or Dolls museums. There is a reconstructed iron age village at Westhay, near Glastonbury, with the ancient craft or working with willow still alive today throughout the county.
The English Civil War (1642-1651) left its mark too, on the castles at Taunton (the old historic county town), Dunster in West Somerset and the ruined castle at Nunney, near Frome. There is also a great coastline with the traditional seaside holiday at Minehead or visit Exmoor with its imposing sea cliffs.
