Worcestershire was merged with Herefordshire between 1974 and 1998, but it is now an independent county once again. It is situated to the west of central England and borders Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and West Midlands. The spa town of Malvern, set amongst the beautiful Malvern Hills, is to the west of the county. The northern edge of the Cotswolds is to the south and Warwickshire is to the east. The two rivers that flow through Worcestershire are the Avon and the Severn.
Worcester is the county town of Worcestershire and is its only city. The magnificent Worcester Cathedral is one of the country’s great Minsters and dominates the city’s skyline. Worcester is renowned for many things, including the famous sauce, glove making, its fine pottery, Worcester County Cricket Club and an abundance of ancient buildings, dominated by the cathedral. Historic buildings and churches worth a visit are St. Helen’s Church in Fish Street, the remains of St. Andrews Church situated high above Pump Street (the tower and spire, nicknamed Glover’s Needle, soars 250ft above the riverside gardens), Nash House, Greyfriars, a timbered Franciscan hostelry built in 1480, now a museum, Guildhall, Tudor House and King Charles’ 1st house.
Britain’s oldest surviving newspaper, which was founded in 1690, has its home in Worcester. It is called Berrow’s Worcester Journal. Also, the famous composer, Edward Elgar, was born at Lower Broadheath in 1857 a few miles north of Worcester. There is a museum there where you can see personal mementoes and original musical scores. You can follow the Elgar Trail and visit places where he sought his inspiration along with houses that he lived in.
Other places of interest in the county are:
Croome Court, Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings, Severn Valley Railway, Malvern Hills, Wadborough, Walton Hill and the Clent Hills, Bewdley, Great Malvern Priory, the only remaining working needle mill in the world at Redditch, Tenbury Wells and its Pump Rooms, West Midlands Safari Park, Hanbury Hall and Witley Court at Great Witley where you can enjoy the newly restored working fountain at this English stately home, now run by English Heritage.
