Yorkshire is the United Kingdom’s largest county and is situated in the north east of England. It is considered to be one of the greenest in England and a very popular tourist destination. Its emblem is the white rose. It has huge areas of unspoilt countryside including the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District and the North York Moors and has earned the nickname of God’s Own County. Indeed much of the coastline is protected as Heritage Coast.
The county town of Yorkshire is the great medieval city of York. Its ancient city walls still encircle it today and the city is dominated by one of the finest gothic churches in Europe, York Minster. There is so much to see and do in York ranging from museums and galleries to fantastic shops. There are the narrow streets of The Shambles to wander around and the tree lined River Ouse offers relaxing boat trips.
Another great town to visit in Yorkshire is the beautiful spa town of Harrogate. Harrogate has wide tree-lined streets, lovely parks and gardens and a large area of grassland in the town centre known as The Stray. A short walk away from the Royal Pump Room Museum, where spa water is still available to try, are the Turkish Baths, which are open to the public seven days a week. Or try the Valley Gardens, with its displays and attractions and where there are still a larger amount of mineral springs than anywhere else in England. Throughout the summer, concerts take place at the Sun Pavilion every Sunday. Maybe take a ride to the nearby village of Ripley, famous for its ice-cream, and visit the castle and gardens.
For peace and tranquillity visit the Yorkshire Dales. Great for walking, cycling, climbing, pot-holing and fishing. The North York Moors National Park offers a great variety of scenery from woodland, open moorland, rolling hills, coastline, pretty towns and historic houses. It is a favourite place to walk or cycle along its forest trails. Robin Hood’s Bay is a quaint fishing village and Helmsley has a 12th century castle to explore.
The west and south of Yorkshire is great for many outdoor activities including walking, climbing and sailing to name but a few. There is the Pennine Way to explore and many other routes such as the Bronte Way. Halifax and Huddersfield have fine examples of Victorian architecture and Wakefield, Barnsley and Pontefract are towns which are very proud of their coal mining heritage.
Along the coast are Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. Indeed, Scarborough is the oldest seaside resort in England. A great place for a family holiday, with its safe sandy beaches. It is also home to the historic Scarborough Castle, set along the rocky headland which separates North Bay Beach and South Bay Beach. Whitby, with its cliff-top abbey dating back to the 13th century, is a traditional maritime town. It has a sandy blue flag beach, pretty cobbled streets, magnificent cliffs and lovely beaches and bays. Filey is an old Edwardian seaside town. It has a five mile stretch of award winning beach which, because it is protected by the rocky Filey Brigg, is a haven for wildlife and birds and families can explore this along its trail.
