Cars, vans and other vehicle recalls

If a fault or safety defect is discovered after a vehicle has been built it may be subject to a recall.

You can easily use the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) database to check on any vehicle to find out if this affects your leased vehicle.

You will need to know the vehicle manufacturer, the vehicle model and the date of manufacture.

How does the recall campaign process work?

  • Recall campaigns were first introduced in 1979 and now apply to all types of motor vehicles and parts. Whether it is car, van, trailer, tyre, wheel, motorcycle, pedal cycle or any parts and accessories, all are monitored under the various voluntary Codes of Practise.
  • These different codes set out the guidelines on procedures for the recall of vehicles, or components that have safety related defects, due to a design feature or construction that may cause a risk of injury to the driver, passengers or other road users.
  • A “safety defect” is defined as “a feature of design or construction liable to cause significant risk of personal injury or death.
  • It the responsibility of the manufacturer of the vehicle or the component manufacturer, to tell VOSA when substantial evidence of a safety defect has arisen and where action is deemed necessary.
  • Evidence may also be passed by VOSA to a manufacturer as a result of any investigations into accidents and safety defects that have been brought to VOSA’s attention from other sources.

What do you do if you think you have a safety defect on your vehicle?

  1. Telephone VOSA on 0117 954 3300 to report this.
  2. E-mail: vsb@vosa.gov.uk.
  3. Or visit the VOSA website and fill out a Safety Defect reporting form.
If you want to check all the latest recalls that have been reported to date then visit the link below to the VOSA search engine. You will need to know the following information to check on any vehicle:
  1. Vehicle manufacturer
  2. Vehicle Model
  3. Date of Manufacture (Specified as the start date on the Vosa search engine)

The Code of Practise has been developed by the following organisations

  • Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA)
  • The Society of Motor Manufacturer and Traders (SMMT)
  • The Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI)
  • Commercial Trailer Association (CTA)
