Personalised Registrations - the rules
A personalised vehicle registration plate can provide you with a unique personal vehicle registation number, owned by you, that can be fixed to your new car or commercial van.
You can fit a personalised plate to a Contract Hire leased vehicle and the contract hire partners can assist you with this.
This simple guide will explain your options, what you can fit to your vehicle and what you cannot.
Things you need to know
- You can make your car or van look as old as you like but you cannot make it look newer than it actually is.
- So you cannot put a Y plate on a T registered vehicle for example.
- Prices are available from a number of sites, however try www.dvlaregistrations.co.uk as a starter site where costs and registration plate choices are readily available.
- Car or Van registrations can normally only be displayed on vehicles registered on the British Mainland i.e. England, Scotland and Wales.
- There are restrictions on the way you can display a registration number so check out the DVLA website for further details.
- There are four types of car or van registration numbers available for sale.

They contain the year identifier at the end of a registration, one to three numbers, a space and then three letters. | Feb 1963 – July 1983 |
| Dateless
|
No year identifier and can consist of a number combination followed by a letter combination and vice versa. Always a space between the number and group of letters. | N/A |
