The SMMT is the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders and exists to serve and support the interests of the UK automotive industry, both home and abroad. They are recognised as the voice of the motor industry and promote the sector to government, stakeholders and the media.
With around 1.7 million cars and commercial vehicles produced annually, plus around three million engines, the UK automotive industry accounts for 10% of the UK's total exports, employs around 850,000 people and generates a turnover of £51 billion annually.
The SMMT plays a central role ensuring that whether home or abroad, the industry is properly recognised at national and international events and publishes on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis, a wide variety of data, and statistics.
This data includes vehicle registrations (cars, vans, trucks and buses), vehicle production, new car CO2 emissions, industry analysis, vehicle data sales and other forecasting techniques. They also offer advice on new innovation through SMMT Foresight Vehicle, which is the knowledge transfer network for the UK automotive industry.
The SMMT also provides help, support and protection for consumers and business customers alike through the following Codes.
