Vehicle Lead Times and Availability will vary depending on a number of factors. It can be an exciting time, choosing your next new car, however after spending hours looking at different makes and models, colours, vehicle cost options, you finally make up your mind only to find out it will take 16 weeks to factory build your car to your exact specification.
Many dealers will stock some physical cars, however because of the many different variations and permutations of models and accessories, they will also look for specific vehicles from their respective central manufacturer stock locator. Finding a model in the exact colour and accessory option specification may be a challenge, so it is always best to be flexible, perhaps having a second colour choice or being prepared to compromise on accessories if you want a quick delivery.
However if after checking vehicle lead time and availability, the dealer cannot find a car that is exactly what you are looking for the next stage is to place a bespoke factory order to your specification. This is where you may end up waiting months for your new car (or van) to be built and then delivered. Audi, BMW, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz are examples of where physical dealer stock and pipeline stock may be low, so your order usually ends up as a factory order.
To further complicate matters, even if you are quoted 16 weeks for your car to be built, the manufacturer production plants will have different build programmes throughout the year. For example Audi may be building Audi A1s and Audi 3s at the moment and the Audi A4 build programme may not start for a few weeks, adding to your expected delivery date.
Once your car has finally been built at the factory, if you have chosen an Audi, BMW, Volkswagen or Mercedes-Benz, the car then has to be shipped from the factory (wherever that factory may be located - Germany, USA, etc), then delivered to the dealer from the port and finally prepared at the dealer premises to a condition that is ready for delivery to you. This all takes time and adds to your expected delivery date.
In summary, if you are thinking of ordering your new Audi, BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz or from any other car manufacturer, just remember to order your car early, if it is a factory order, or be flexible on other colours and options to get a quicker vehicle lead time and availability.
